Working as a Locksmith-Fitter in Poland: What Skills Do You Need and Must You Be a Welder?

What does a locksmith-fitter of metal structures do in a Polish factory? We break down real duties, salary levels, the importance of technical drawings, and whether welding skills are mandatory.

In any metal structure manufacturing plant in Poland, there are two key figures: the welder and the locksmith-fitter (ślusarz-monter). While the welder is responsible for a perfect and strong metal connection, the fitter is the "brain" and "architect" of this process.

Many candidates turn down lucrative fitter jobs because they fear they will be required to perform professional welding. The experts at Zvaryuvalnyk.xyz dispel the myths and explain what a fitter actually does in a Polish production facility.

The Main Myth: "A fitter must be able to weld like a professional"

Reality: No, you do not need to lay perfect seams that pass ultrasonic or X-ray tests. That is what welders are for. However, a locksmith-fitter must possess the skill of "tack welding" (in Polish — heftowanie or sczepianie).

Your task is to assemble the structure from individual parts and secure them with short spot welds (usually using the MAG 135 method) so that the structure holds together. After you, a professional welder will come and weld the part completely.

What does a locksmith-fitter actually need to know?

Reading technical drawings (Rysunek techniczny): This is skill #1. Without the ability to read isometrics, understand scales, projections, and welding symbols on drawings, you will not be able to work as a fitter. You are given a drawing and a pile of metal—you must assemble a finished product from it.

Working with power tools: Confident use of an angle grinder, drill, and cutter. You will grind welds, bevel edges, and fit parts together millimetre by millimetre.

Using measuring tools: A tape measure, caliper, square, and micrometer are your best friends. Polish quality standards are very strict; tolerances are often measured in millimetres.

Spatial imagination: Understanding how a flat drawing on paper turns into a three-dimensional 3D structure.

How much does a fitter earn in Poland?

The salary of a qualified locksmith-fitter who reads drawings perfectly and assembles structures quickly is often equal to a welder's salary, and sometimes even exceeds it. Rates start from 28-30 PLN netto (in hand) per hour and can reach 35-40 PLN for top-class specialists.
